Glutathione injections and IV drips: what they are, the risks and what CDSCO says
A glutathione injection or IV drip puts glutathione straight into a vein, often mixed with vitamin C or other ingredients, and usually over several sessions. Because it skips the gut, far more of it reaches your bloodstream than it would from a tablet. Salons, spas and some clinics sell these drips as a quick route to the "fair, glowing" skin people search for, and the pitch gets louder in wedding season. We don't recommend them for skin lightening, and this section explains why.
Are they legal in India? In May 2026, CDSCO (India's drug regulator) issued a public notice making it clear that cosmetic products are not allowed to be given by injection and can't be promoted as a treatment. The notice named glutathione drips and skin-lightening injections directly. In other words, injectable glutathione is not a cosmetic. These are medical procedures that need proper medical oversight, so a salon or any non-medical provider offering "whitening drips" is going against this guidance.
Are they safe? Health regulators in several countries, the Philippines FDA among them, have warned people against injectable glutathione for skin lightening. Reported risks include serious allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis, which can start during the drip itself, and severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome. There have also been liver, kidney and thyroid problems, and infections from unsafe needles or poor hygiene. Fake or contaminated products from unlicensed sellers are a known problem too. A 2018 review in Dermatology Practical & Conceptual looked at the only IV glutathione trial: it reported liver dysfunction in 32% of patients, and one person went into anaphylactic shock. Nobody knows the long-term effects of repeated high doses for cosmetic use, because that hasn't been properly studied.
Do they work? The evidence is weak. The same review found "little convincing evidence" that glutathione helps with pigmentation at all, and IV use came out worst on both results and safety. Any lightening people do see fades once they stop, because the skin keeps making melanin. That's why clients are so often pushed into repeat "maintenance" sessions.
What do they cost? Prices depend on the city, the clinic and the dose. One major Indian clinic chain lists roughly ₹4,800 to ₹9,000 per session. Salons often recommend 6 to 10 sessions, sometimes more, so a full course can easily run into tens of thousands of rupees before any maintenance. Very cheap injections from a salon, an online seller or a home visit are a big red flag, not a bargain. And every extra session is more exposure to the risks.
Glutathione does have medical uses. Doctors sometimes give it in hospital for specific reasons, where they prescribe it, set the dose and watch you closely. That has very little in common with a salon drip for skin tone. If you're still considering an injection, see only a qualified doctor, ideally a dermatologist, at a registered medical facility. Ask why you medically need it, whether the product is registered and what emergency facilities they have, and tell them about allergies, asthma, liver, kidney or thyroid problems, pregnancy and every medicine you take. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, avoid injections and drips completely.
If skin tone is what you're after, the safer path is slower but real: sunscreen every day (SPF 30+), a brightening cream you put on your skin, and a dermatologist's plan for melasma or pigmentation that won't shift.
Common questions
Are glutathione injections legal in India?
CDSCO has said cosmetic products can't be given by injection or promoted as a treatment, and its notice named glutathione drips and skin-lightening injections. A salon offering them is going against that guidance. Details in glutathione injections in India.
How much does a glutathione injection cost?
One major Indian clinic chain lists roughly ₹4,800 to ₹9,000 per session, and clinics usually suggest several sessions. See our price and safety guide.
Is a glutathione drip safe before my wedding?
We'd strongly advise against it. A reaction in the weeks before your wedding is the last thing you need. Read our IV drip guide and consider a gentle topical routine instead.
Are the results permanent?
No. Any lightening fades once you stop, because your skin carries on making melanin. More in glutathione IV drips.
I've already had drips. What should I do?
Stop having them. If you notice a rash, swelling or breathing trouble, or just feel unwell, see a doctor. Our side effects guide lists the warning signs.
