Quick answer

What does glutathione do for your skin? It's an antioxidant, so its main job is helping protect skin cells from the damage that UV light and pollution cause. It may also nudge melanin production towards a lighter pigment, which is why people use it for dullness and uneven tone. Small studies show results that are modest and slow, over about 8 to 12 weeks, and they work best when you also wear sunscreen every day.

In India and across Asia, glutathione is everywhere right now, and the ads promise glowing, spotless skin. So what does it really do, and what should you expect from it? Here's what we know.

A quick word on “skin brightening”

Every skin tone is healthy. Your skin doesn't need to become a different colour, and good skincare isn't about that. What a glutathione product can reasonably aim for is healthy, even-looking skin. That means fading dark spots, lifting dullness and protecting your skin from damage.

How does glutathione work on skin?

Your skin colour comes from melanin. Cells called melanocytes make it, and there are two main kinds:

  • Eumelanin, which is dark brown or black
  • Pheomelanin, which is lighter and more reddish-yellow

Researchers think glutathione helps skin in a few different ways. It may push pigment production towards the lighter pheomelanin. It may also slow down tyrosinase, the enzyme your skin needs to make melanin in the first place.

And because it's an antioxidant, it fights the oxidative stress that sun and pollution cause, which can lead to dullness and dark spots.

What can glutathione help with?

  • Dull skin can start to look fresher.
  • Uneven tone can look more balanced.
  • Dark spots and old acne marks can fade, slowly. Our guide to glutathione for pigmentation goes into more detail.
  • Tan may fade a bit faster, as long as you're also protecting your skin from the sun.

What results can you realistically expect?

Most people need 8 to 12 weeks of regular use before they notice anything. If you're wondering about timing, we've written about how long glutathione takes to work.

The change is usually small and gradual. Think a bit more glow and evenness. Your skin colour won't change dramatically. Results also differ from person to person, because your genes, your skin type and how much sun you get all play a part.

If a product promises results “in 7 days” or calls them “guaranteed”, be careful. That's marketing talking.

Cream, tablet, or injection: which is best for skin?

Form Pros Cons
Cream / lotion Goes straight on the face; gentle and low risk Works on the skin surface; you need to use it every day
Tablets Works “from inside” and reaches the whole body How well it's absorbed is still debated; talk to a doctor first
Injections None we'd point to Regulators have issued safety warnings; not recommended for cosmetic use

For most people, the safest place to start is a glutathione cream plus sunscreen every day. Before you choose, have a read of our guide to glutathione side effects.

Ingredients that pair well with glutathione

  • Vitamin C helps keep glutathione active, and it brightens skin on its own too.
  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3) helps even out tone and supports your skin barrier.
  • Alpha lipoic acid (also called thioctic acid) is another antioxidant that backs glutathione up.
  • Hyaluronic acid adds hydration.
  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+) matters more than any of the others.

A simple routine to follow

At night, wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry. Smooth a thin layer of glutathione cream over your face and neck, let it soak in, and go to sleep.

In the morning, cleanse and moisturise. Then put on sunscreen (SPF 30+), and reapply it if you're spending time outdoors.

Small habits that make a difference

  • Do a patch test before you use any new product for the first time.
  • Wear sunscreen every single day. Without it, sun exposure will undo the progress you've made.
  • Stick with it. Use it daily for at least 2 to 3 months.
  • Drink enough water and get decent sleep.
  • Don't stack it with lots of strong actives, like strong acids or retinoids, unless someone qualified has advised you to.

So, is it worth trying?

It can be a useful ingredient if you want brighter, more even-looking skin, especially in a cream that also has vitamin C, and only if you're wearing sunscreen daily. Give it weeks. Nothing will change overnight.
