Quick answer

Does glutathione help with anti-ageing? Possibly, a little. Glutathione is an antioxidant, so it helps fight the oxidative stress that ages skin, and a few small studies saw slight improvements in wrinkles and elasticity. That evidence is still early. Daily sunscreen and retinoids are the best-proven anti-ageing steps, and glutathione can sit alongside them as a supporting extra.

From your late 20s, your skin slowly loses collagen and picks up more sun damage. Glutathione is often sold as an “anti-ageing” ingredient, so here’s what it can and can’t realistically do.

What actually ages skin

  • Sun damage (photoageing). This is the biggest cause of wrinkles, spots and sagging.
  • Oxidative stress. Free radicals from UV, pollution and smoking damage collagen.
  • Natural ageing. Over time, skin makes less collagen and renews itself more slowly.
  • Lifestyle. Sleep, stress, sugar and smoking all play a part.

Where glutathione fits

Glutathione neutralises free radicals and helps recycle vitamins C and E, which is how it helps defend skin against oxidative stress. A few studies saw modest improvements in wrinkles and skin elasticity, but they were short and small.

So think of it as a supporting ingredient. It won’t treat wrinkles on its own.

What works best for ageing skin?

Here’s how glutathione compares with the steps that have better evidence behind them.

Step Evidence
Daily sunscreen SPF 30+ ✅ Strongest: prevents most visible ageing
Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin) ✅ Strong: boost collagen and smooth texture
Vitamin C serum ✅ Good: an antioxidant that supports collagen
Moisturiser ✅ Plumps up fine lines and protects the skin barrier
Glutathione 🟡 Early: antioxidant support

A simple routine for skin over 30

Morning

  1. A gentle cleanser
  2. Vitamin C serum, if you like (it’s optional)
  3. Moisturiser
  4. Sunscreen, SPF 30+

Night

  1. Cleanse
  2. A retinoid 2 to 3 nights a week. Start slowly, and ask a dermatologist first.
  3. On the other nights, a glutathione night cream

Keeping retinoids and brightening creams on separate nights lowers the chance of irritation. Our guide on how to use a glutathione night cream walks you through it.

Habits that slow ageing

  • Don’t smoke.
  • Sleep 7 to 8 hours.
  • Eat plenty of colourful vegetables and fruit, and enough protein. There are ideas in foods that boost glutathione.
  • Outdoors, wear a hat and sunglasses.

Common questions

At what age should I start glutathione for anti-ageing?
There’s no set age. Sunscreen matters from your teens. Antioxidant creams can come in during your 20s or 30s.

Can glutathione remove wrinkles?
No product truly “removes” wrinkles. Glutathione may help your skin look healthier, but retinoids and sunscreen do the heavy lifting.
