There isn’t one winner. Glutathione and kojic acid are two of India’s most popular brightening ingredients, found in creams, serums and soaps. They work differently, so the right pick depends on your skin and your concern.

How each one works

Glutathione is an antioxidant your body already makes. It may slow tyrosinase (the enzyme that makes melanin) and shift pigment toward lighter forms. It also helps skin cope with oxidative stress from sun and pollution.

Kojic acid comes from fungi. Some is made while rice ferments into sake.

It works mainly by blocking tyrosinase, so people use it for dark spots and patchy pigmentation.

Side by side

Glutathione Kojic acid
Main action Antioxidant, plus helps balance pigment Blocks tyrosinase
Best for Dullness, overall glow, mild uneven tone Specific dark spots, patchy pigmentation
Irritation risk Low for most people Can irritate, or cause a contact allergy in some people
Speed Gradual Gradual
Sensitive skin Usually the gentler choice Patch test carefully first
Stability Can break down with air and light Can also be unstable, so it’s often used as kojic dipalmitate

Which should you choose?

  • Dull skin, and you want an overall glow: glutathione.
  • Particular dark spots or patches: kojic acid may target them more directly.
  • Sensitive or reactive skin: glutathione is usually the gentler start.
  • Stubborn pigmentation or melasma: please see a dermatologist, because prescription treatments often work better. Our guide on glutathione for melasma explains why.

Can you use them together?

Yes. Many products already combine them, since they complement each other. A few cautions:

  • Bring them in one at a time, so you know which one your skin reacts to.
  • Don’t pile on too many strong actives at once.
  • Wear sunscreen daily with either one.

Is kojic acid soap or glutathione soap any better?

Not really. Soap is rinsed off in seconds, so neither does much by itself. A leave-on cream or serum works better. More in our glutathione soap guide.

Our verdict

Neither is “better” for everyone. Glutathione is the gentle, all-round antioxidant, good for glow and a more even tone. Kojic acid aims more directly at spots, but it’s more likely to irritate.

What we’d do: dull or sensitive skin, start with glutathione. A few clear dark spots on skin that doesn’t react easily, try kojic acid after a patch test. Either way, wear sunscreen every day.
