Glutathione and vitamin C are both antioxidants, and both are used for brighter, more even skin. Which should you choose? Really, they work best together.
How they differ
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid and its derivatives) is one of the most researched skincare antioxidants. It brightens and fades the look of dark spots. Because it supports collagen, it helps with fine lines too.
The catch: some forms, like pure L-ascorbic acid, can sting sensitive skin and oxidise quickly (turning orange).
Glutathione is often called the body’s master antioxidant.
It may help balance pigment production for a more even tone, and it’s generally gentle. Its weak spot is research: there’s much less of it in skincare than for vitamin C.
Side by side
| Vitamin C | Glutathione | |
|---|---|---|
| Research in skincare | Extensive | Smaller studies |
| Brightening | Yes | Yes (modest) |
| Collagen / anti-ageing | Yes | Limited |
| Gentleness | Some forms can sting | Usually gentle |
| Stability | Oxidises easily | Can also break down |
| Best time | Often morning, under sunscreen | Often night |
Why they work better together
Glutathione helps recycle vitamin C, so it stays active longer, and vitamin C helps support glutathione. That’s why many brightening products and oral supplements combine them.
A simple routine using both
- Morning: cleanser, then vitamin C serum, then moisturiser, and finally sunscreen SPF 30+.
- Night: cleanser, then glutathione cream.
Or keep it simple with one product that has both.
Which should you pick if you only want one?
- Fine lines as well as glow: vitamin C.
- Sensitive skin, gentle brightening: glutathione.
- Simplest routine: one product with both.
What we’d do
Vitamin C has more research. Glutathione is often gentler. They support each other, so a combination is usually the smartest choice.
If your skin is fine with vitamin C, use it in the morning and glutathione at night. If vitamin C stings, start with glutathione. Either way, sunscreen matters most.
