Dark circles are one of the most common skin worries in India. Whether glutathione can do anything for yours comes down to what's causing them, so start there.

What causes dark circles? The 4 main types

Type What it looks like Cause
Pigmented Brown Extra melanin, sun, rubbing, genetics
Vascular Bluish or purple Thin skin that shows the blood vessels underneath; poor sleep
Structural A shadow under the eye Hollows, puffiness, ageing
Mixed A combination More than one of the above

Here's a quick way to tell. Gently stretch the skin under your eye. If the darkness fades, it's probably vascular or structural. If it stays brown, it's probably pigmented.

Where glutathione may help

Glutathione is a brightening antioxidant, so the type it's most likely to help, slowly, is pigmented (brown) dark circles. It can't do anything about hollows, puffiness or blood vessels you can see through the skin.

Be careful near your eyes

The skin under your eyes is very thin and sensitive, so go slowly.

  • Read the label first. Only use a product near your eyes if it says it's suitable for the eye area.
  • Never put it inside the lash line or on your eyelids.
  • Use a tiny amount, and pat it in rather than rubbing.
  • If it stings, turns red or makes your eyes water, stop using it.
  • Face creams that contain kojic acid or other strong actives may be too harsh for under your eyes. A proper eye cream is often the better pick.

The habits that matter most

Honestly, these will usually do more than any cream.

  • Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep.
  • Stop rubbing your eyes. It's a big cause of brown circles, especially if you have allergies.
  • Treat allergies and a blocked nose.
  • Wear sunscreen and sunglasses when you're outside.
  • Drink enough water, and cut down on salty food at night if puffiness is your issue. A cold compress in the morning helps with puffiness too.

When to see a doctor

Get your dark circles checked if they show up suddenly, appear on only one side, or come with swelling or itching. A dermatologist can also treat deep hollows and stubborn pigmentation.

What we'd suggest

For brown, pigmented dark circles, glutathione may help gently over time. It won't change hollows or vascular circles. Be very careful with anything you put near your eyes, and put your energy into sleep, sun protection and keeping your hands off your eyes. You can read more in glutathione for pigmentation.
