Glutathione face washes are now one of the most popular skincare buys in India. They don't cost much, they're easy to add to your routine, and the packs promise “glow”. But can something you rinse off in under a minute really change your skin? Mostly, no. Here's why, and when one is still worth buying.

What a face wash can and can't do

A face wash is on your skin for roughly 30 to 60 seconds before you rinse it away. That's very little time for any active ingredient to do much.

A good glutathione face wash will clean your skin properly, and it can leave it feeling fresh and soft. It also makes a pleasant first step in a brightening routine.

What it's unlikely to do is make your skin noticeably brighter by itself. That kind of change mostly comes from leave-on products, such as serums and creams, used with sunscreen every day.

So is a glutathione face wash worth buying?

It can be. It makes sense if you need a new face wash anyway, if it's gentle and suits your skin, and if you see it for what it is, which is a cleanser first and a treatment second.

What doesn't make sense is paying a lot extra just for “glutathione” on the label, especially if the wash leaves your skin dry or irritated.

How to choose a good one

Look past the glutathione and check what else is in the bottle.

  • The cleansing base should be gentle. If your skin feels tight or dry after washing, skip washes with harsh foaming agents.
  • A pH of around 5 to 5.5 is kinder to the skin barrier.
  • Helpful extras include niacinamide, vitamin C, or a mild exfoliant if your skin is oily.
  • If your skin is sensitive, choose one without fragrance.

For oily or acne-prone skin, a gel or foaming wash works well, and one with salicylic acid may help. For dry or sensitive skin, go for a cream wash or one that doesn't foam much.

Common mistakes

  • Scrubbing hard. Irritation can actually leave darker marks behind.
  • Washing too often. Twice a day is enough.
  • Using hot water, when lukewarm is better.
  • Expecting the face wash to do all the work.

A routine where the face wash actually helps

At night, wash with your glutathione face wash (or any gentle one) and pat your face dry. Then apply a glutathione cream or serum and leave it on overnight.

In the morning, use a gentle wash, then a moisturiser, then sunscreen, SPF 30+.

Our take

As a gentle cleanser, a glutathione face wash is fine. It just won’t do much for brightening on its own. If you want real change, slowly, pair it with a glutathione product that stays on your skin and sunscreen every day, and give it 8 to 12 weeks.
